about me
So, I took half a day trying to figure out what to write about myself… and I suppose that should be your first clue.
Because who am I, really, if not a collection of little very often wildly tangential thoughts that somehow coexist in my head?
Is it my work? Probably not. I spend my time trying to understand the Universe and, if anything, that has mostly taught me how very little I understand about the Universe.
Is it my interests? Also difficult, because they seem to change at approximately the speed of light. Okay, exaggerating. Maybe \(0.5c\). Fast enough that by the time I have confidently declared something my thing, I have probably found three new things to be fascinated by.
I think the closest description I have is that I am endlessly curious and perpetually undecided. I can love everything and hate everything at the same time. Point at almost anything and I will probably say, “Oh, nice!”…partly because I genuinely find a ridiculous number of things interesting and partly because I am spectacularly bad at confrontation.
I am also very easily distracted by beautiful things. Mountains. Clouds. Old buildings. Tiny cafés. Plants growing out of impossible cracks in walls. A particularly nice patch of sunlight. The Moon looking suspiciously large. A dog on the other side of the road, or people being well..people. You get the idea.
If you walk somewhere with me, there is a reasonably high probability that I will interrupt whatever conversation we are having to point in a completely different direction and say:
“Look! So pretty, isn’t it?”
And then, five minutes later, do exactly the same thing again.
I like learning things without necessarily needing a reason to learn them only to be distracted by something else, start doing that and then remember that I still want to learn this thing that I started and come back to it. One day it might be cosmology, the next architecture, photography, some historical rabbit hole, why bread behaves the way it does, or a completely unnecessary fact that I will remember forever while forgetting something actually important.
I suppose there is something comforting about not having a neat answer to “Who are you?” anyway. I am still collecting things…places, people, ideas, questions, photos, half-finished hobbies, oddly specific facts, and thoughts that begin somewhere sensible and end approximately seventeen tangents away.
Maybe that is the answer.
I am “A work in progress, with too many tabs open”.
And probably somewhere nearby, pointing at something and saying, “Oh look!”
